Having your sound system professionally tuned for optimal sound performance should be done when you install a new sound system, replace any major component of your sound system, or if you have volunteer sound engineers who like to “tinker” with EQ settings for the system.
When your system EQ is set incorrectly, problem frequencies (those that tend to be boomy, squeaky, or are prone to feedback easily) can slip through. It’s not always possible to pinpoint these frequencies by ear. That’s why it’s important to have your system tuned.
Tuning your system involves using pink noise, a specialized microphone for capturing the sound of the pink noise, software to analyze the frequency responses, and a trained sound engineer to make the proper adjustments.
